Recent
efforts
2008
Wilderness 101,
July 26th, 2008: Ultra-endurance mountain bike race, 101 miles, 50th
place (of 321 entrants) in 9 hr 11 min. Bad legs and lots of struggle
on the day, but I loved just being able to participate.
Rocktober
Challenge Marathon -- a 70 mile (110k) mountain bike race on a
gloriously brutish, technical, and impudent course in central
Pennsylvania's RB Winter State Park. [1st place in age group (now 45+ ;
), 8hr 24 minutes on the course.
2007
Paris-Brest-Paris
(PBP) -- the world's most famous brevet cycling event! August 21-24,
2007. Course:
Riding from Paris, to Brest, and returning to Paris over a total of
1227 kilometers | 762.5 miles. We completed the distance in 74 hrs. We
began with the 84 hour start, rode 325 miles in the first 25 hours, and
slept about 6 hours total over the 3 days of riding (though we took
many leisurely breaks at cafes and check-points along the way!). The
2007 edition was run under the worst weather conditions on record --
constant rain, high winds, and cool temperatures -- in a word --
perfect!
Some Paris-Brest-Paris
2007 photos, mostly of riding in and around Paris prior to and
after the event, are posted on my facebook page. The inclement weather
was not particularly conducive to picture taking on the ride itself.
Preceding
the Paris-Brest-Paris event itself, a group of 6 cyclists living in
State College PA completed the four qualifying brevet rides, comprising
200, 300, 400, and 600 kilometer timed events. The overall experience
was quite extraordinary. For a more detailed report, see friend and co-PBPer Matt Ferrari's
blogged bits (scroll down an entry or two to get to PBP reports).
