Matt Poehner has received the Paul Pimlseur Award for his article "Beyond the Test:  L2 Dynamic Assessment and the Transcendence of Mediated Learning", which appeared in the Modern Language Journal 91 (2007): 323-340. The Award is presented annually by the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages and the Modern Language Journal  to high quality research that impacts on foreign language learning and teaching. The Award is named in honor of Paul Pimsleur for his outstanding contributions to the field of language learning and teaching.

 

Matt is currently assistant professor of World Languages in the College of Education with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Applied Linguistics.

Gil Watz Dissertation Fellowships 2005-2008
The Center for Language Acquisition in conjunction with the College of the Liberal Arts will provide up to five dissertation fellowships per academic year for doctoral students working on a dissertation in applied linguistics. For more information click here.

Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics
During the summers of 2002 and 2005, the Center for Language Acquisition hosted Summer Institutes in Applied Linguistics. The Summer Institute brings internationally renowned scholars in applied linguistics to Penn State. Two- and four-week programs are offered on a variety of topics in applied linguistics, with special emphasis on the learning and teaching of second languages.

The next Summer Institute is scheduled from June 22 to July 17, 2009.  The institute will have two sessions, each lasting two weeks.  The first will run from June 22 through July 3 and the second session from July 6 through July 17.  Participants will have the option of attending the first session, the second session, or both.  A broad range of topics in applied linguistics will be represented, with particular focus on the teaching and learning of additional languages.  For more information, click here
